CHAPTER ONE:
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Successful organization differs from the inefficient organization in many ways. One of the differences is the pattern of leadership.
In most case, successful organizations are characterized by dynamic practice and effective leadership. While the unsuccessful organization are characterized by relative and ineffective leadership. Recognition of this is one of the crucial impart underlying the vest amount of working and research on leadership.
Leadership is the process of inducing people to desire objective could be organization objective the subordinate objective or the objective of the leader.
Leadership most take place within the context of a group leading, most leader recognize is of controlling, planning, organizing nature of the modern business environment, leadership is important because success of leadership adopted by various organization is leading their subordinate towards the realization of organizational objective. This is the true because workers relationship and satisfaction with their leadership style can affect their performance in the organization.
It is in view of this, that this research work top to look at the influence of leadership on attaining organizational objective.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
Works in an organization have some needs to satisfy, and the way the needs are being satisfy in organization can affect performance. Leadership of some organization is sometimes ignorant to certain things that induce workers to perform in order to attain the objective of the organization.
The leadership style adopted by leaders can greatly affect the performance of workers, especially if such leadership style helps the subordinate in achieving their objective in the organization. Thus when leadership influences the subordinate by meeting his needs, it will have impact on attainment of organization objectives.
The influence of leadership on attaining organizational objectives, using feeds and flour mills, Dangote as a case study, however in the course of the study, we shall look at what is meant by leadership style, whether workers of Dangote plc are satisfied with the leadership style of the superiors, the nature of relationship between workers and leaders or superiors of Dangote Plc does leadership style of superior geared towards meeting the needs of workers for performance.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The study world examine the following questions
1. To what extent does leadership style influence employees performance?
2. Is leadership style geared towards meeting the needs of workers in an organization for performance?
3. What is the relationship between leadership style and workers performance in an organization?
4. What leadership style could be adopted to improve employees performance?
1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
The following hypotheses were formulated and tested in this study.
Ho: 1 workers satisfaction with the leadership style of their boss will not influence them to high performance.
Ho: 2 Leadership style geared towards meeting the needs of workers will not influence them to high performance.
Ho: 3 The relationship between leadership style and workers performance in an organization will not affect the attainment of the organization objective.
1.5 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Effective leadership has come to be recognized as the key aspect which attention must be focus if an organization most actualize its set of goals and objective, an also keep a float with the rapid economic development. Therefore, if management exercise the right leadership, the will create an atmosphere in which individuals in the organization will feels that they have collective role to play. The main purpose of this study is to:
1. Know how leadership style can affect the performance of workers in an organization to attain its objective.
2. Look at how various leadership styles can influence workers performance in attaining organization objective.
3. Look into the problems associated with leadership process in the organization and proper solution to such problems by ways of recommendation.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study is concerned with the influence of leadership on attaining organizational objective of Dangote plc. There is no organization which involves the activity of human being, materials. And finance which does not involves one form of leadership style or the other. This is done primarily to effectively manage and co-ordinate all resources to achieve organizational set goals and objectives.
Specifically, this study is limited in scope to the influence of leadership on attaining organization objectives with a focus on Dangote plc Lagos state.
1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The issue of leadership style is considered necessary by the researcher, because it is the central issues in the improvement of work performance in order to attain the organizational goals and objectives.
The findings and recommendations of the research wi8ll enrich Dangote flour mill plc. Lagos state as a guide in handling leadership and organization problems.
Significantly, the research will also contribute to the existing literature in the areas of leadership on ever-expanding organizations.
1.8 LIMITATION
In the course of doing this research, some problems were faced by the researcher. The major problem was finance. The fund for printing the questionnaire was not easy. Another problem encounter was the attitude of the respondent towards the research; some Miss-interpreted the exercise thinking it was a set up.
Finally, was the problem of time factor, as a result of vary short duration of the semester, it was not easy combining lectures, assignments, test and examination preparation with going to collection materials for the study from library.
1.9 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are defined as they are used I this study.
Leadership: This is defined as the behavioural pattern exhibited by the leader in attainment of goals and objective.
Organization: This is the structure procession which people interact for objectives.
Subordinate: This is the person who works under another person designated as leader.
Leading: This is defined as the process of inducing others to achieve what you what them to do.
Leader: This is the person who directs the activities and effort of other people towards the realization of objectives of the organization.
Influence: This is creating the want and desire in orde4r for subordinate to do what you want and desire them to do.
